NE Box Newsletter for August 16, 2019 Pickup

 Welcome, welcome!

Here we are, well into August, and at the beginning of okra season. Okra’s a pretty polarizing veg—some absolutely love it, some absolutely loathe it. I’m in the “love it” camp, and if you’re in that camp with me, go ahead and add some to your box this week. Okra gets along well in a stew with tomatoes, onions, and eggplant. It’s also super good friends with corn–be that whole kernels of corn, or fried to crispy perfection wrapped in a crunchy coating of cornmeal. Sooooo many possibilities! Let us know your favorite ways with okra. Don’t forget about the Seasonal and Simple app—it’s loaded with tips and recipes for all the fruit and veg in season– it’s super handy, while also inspiring and informative!

NEW this week, we’re bringing you grassfed, all-beef sausage patties from Range West Beef. That’s Luke Jacobsen of Range West in the picture above. Range West owns and operates a small, diversified family farm located in South-Central Nebraska. Their family has been farming and raising cattle in this area for over 120 years, and they work hard to produce the best quality, most flavorful, and healthy beef possible. Their cattle are born, raised and finished on grass or hay. No grain is fed and neither antibiotics nor synthetic hormones are used. They do not feed any ethanol by-products or animal by-products to their grass fed cattle.

We’ve got lots of different peppers for you this week. Sweet bananas, mild shishitos, and a hot pepper mix with jalapenos and hot bananas. And we’ve got green bells. Some might consider green bell peppers to be a tad bitter. Wouldn’t you be? After constantly being passed over for the more flashy, colorful bells… But these sturdy work horses are a consistent choice. Their personalities shine when they are paired with the sweet nature of an onion. Their sharpness is softened by creamy scrambled eggs. Don’t be fooled by their perceived plainness. They are just what you are looking for.

How did everyone like the bagels? If you didn’t get a chance to try them out last week, never fear–they are here for you again! I’m a big fan of making a vegetable cream cheese. This week I’m going to make a delicious cheese spread for my bagels with chevre, small dices of onion, carrot, and purple daikon radish. Maybe even cukes and cherry tomatoes too!

We still have all of our Daniels Produce canned items on sale this week. Also, we’ve got a super delectable Smokey Strawberry Jam from Daniels. It’s been a hit in the LTF office, for sure. Mixed with chevre, or paired with cheddar, or honestly in a good ol’ PB & J—it’s fantastic. It would be a lovely addition to a marinade or dressing. Or eat it by the spoonful, sitting by the fire. The first ten folks to put it in their boxes this week, you lucky folks get to try it FOR FREE! If I were you, I’d hurry and do just that.

Have a nice week everyone. Eat well and be well.
